Structure Fires

Structure fires almost always release asbestos and are one of the biggest causes of asbestos spills in the country. Asbestos is released into the air when it is made Glossary Link friable. When a fire destroys the building materials within a structure, any material containing asbestos is broken down into its most basic components and then they are released into the air with smoke by the rise of heat. The rise of heat efficiently causes the dispersion of the asbestos into the area within and around the structure and in many cases asbestos contamination will be found many blocks from the source of the structure fire. All structure fires should be considered to be asbestos spills until a thorough inspection of the area determines otherwise. We recommend to everyone; KEEP AWAY FROM THE AREA OF ALL STRUCTURE FIRES TO AVOID POSSIBLE ASBESTOS EXPOSURE.
